Chez Panisse, 25 years old and one of the most influential restaurants in the country, is located in an old wood house that`s set up from a busy street. When you enter, you feel that you`ve been transported to another world. The all-wood interior is very simple, with wood tables, white tablecloths, and fine silverware. The food, prepared by Alice Waters and her staff, helped to change (some say revolutionize) fine American dining by using only the freshest ingredients grown by local, organic farmers. Like the food, the service is exceptional: a waiter will be at your side or will disappear depending on your unspoken wish. The restaurant serves a four course prix-fixe menu that changes with what`s freshest. There are no substitutions. Appetizers may include a green bean salad with pancetta and chanterelles, or yellowfin tuna confit with onions, mint and watercress. Entrees could include a grilled Paine Farm squab with honey and ginger, or grilled bay scallops and salmon en brochette with citrus risotto.
Chez Panisse is an upscale restaurant that offers guests Californian and French dishes. Expect the average entrée to cost over $60, and there`s a prix-fixe menu. Plan to dress on the formal side. Tie preferred, but optional.
Atmosphere: The restaurant has a wood finished décor accented by warm tones, enhanced by flowers and plants. In general, the lighting is soft. The restaurant has a romantic atmosphere. Table talk is no problem here - noise level is unobtrusive.
