Dark and formidable, The Big Four refers to the four men (Crocker, Hopkins, Huntington, and Stanford) who "made" San Francisco business in the 19th century. The reference is not inappropriate. The room feels like a prestigious men`s club, although the cuisine is modern. Game is a favorite, as are veal chops. The desserts are expertly presented, and the chocolate souffle cake is extraordinary.
Serving American, Californian and Continental meals, this is a fine dining restaurant. Expect the average entrée to cost in the range of $20 to $30.
Atmosphere: Big Four old home before. The restaurant has an elegant décor. The interior is enhanced by displayed artwork, and the lighting is set quite dim. The fireplace adds to the atmosphere and mood here, and there are walls covered with photos.
The establishment is spacious. It is romantic and relaxed and attracts a mature and classy clientele. Table talk is no problem here - noise level is unobtrusive.
