As the name suggests, there are lots of French (and Francophile) patrons pulling on cigarettes here, but the young, cool crowd looks none the worse for wear. The minuscule, well-lit room is filled with alternative music, magazines, and sweet knickknacks. With loyal dogs on leashes parked outside, many often stop in for an afternoon coffee or a late, cheap bite. Favorite dishes include couscous with chicken, red peppers, raisins and pine nuts, and the mozzarella sandwich on focaccia with tomatoes and fresh basil. Croissants, pain au chocolat, lemon tarts and fresh juices keep them coming.
Café Gitane focuses on French and Italian. Expect the average entrée to cost in the range of $8 to $12.
